If you already own a roof rack, a roof bike rack could be the simplest solution, however a boot or hitch mounted carrier is often easier to load and unload and suits heavier bikes, even e-bikes. Although it held our bikes just fine most of the time, while we were driving on a twisty road on a rainy day, the clamp gradually slid down the narrow tire of one bike, letting the bike fall over. We also talked to experts at REI’s headquarters, and we surveyed more than 20 bike clubs across the country. Overall, we liked the four-bike version of the Yakima RidgeBack. The SuperClamp EX is one of the lightest four-bike tray-style hitch racks available, and it can accommodate two bikes up to 60 pounds each, along with two others up to 35 pounds each. It accepts thru-axle designs, and RockyMounts claims that the SwitchHitter fits all styles of crossbars. It extends the bike rack almost a foot farther back from the car, though, which makes it less stable, and it adds 36 pounds to the whole assembly. But while the clamp assembly in front that holds a bike is easy to tighten with a knob, putting it together every time you mount and dismount a bike is cumbersome. But it wasn’t as easy to use as the best models, despite its higher price: Releasing the clamping arms was a little trickier than with other racks. And it folds flat for storage, which makes it perfect for apartment dwellers and others who have limited space for their cycling gear. The original model, RT201, fits standard truck beds, while the newer RT202 is designed for use with the C-channel bed-rail systems that are available for some Chevrolet, GMC, and Toyota pickups. The Thule Apex Swing 4 was one of three models we tested that didn’t require that. Buy Now. The Saris Solo is a single-bike trunk rack that’s very light and inexpensive. The weight capacities, rack weights, and prices are those of the tested models; n/a = not applicable. If you don’t mind removing your bike’s front wheel, the Thule Bed Rider may work for you, especially if you have a smaller pickup bed. The Kuat Trio is similar in design to the RockyMounts SwitchHitter. A bike rack attaches your bike to your car's roof, hitch, trunk or truck bed to free up space inside the car. A potential drawback for some cyclists: The Sherpa 2.0 can’t expand to hold more than two bikes (although nearly 70 percent of our survey respondents told us they carry only up to two bikes). Tray-style hitch racks are still easier to use overall, though. Features to look for on an eBay bicycle rack. Was: $139.00. It was also notably harder to tilt the rack to access a vehicle’s rear and to fold up when empty. Rubber and foam padding safeguard against scratches and scuffs to both your bike and your vehicle. When possible, we folded, tilted, or swung the rack to see how easily we could access a vehicle’s rear cargo area. If you want the advantages of a fork-mount roof rack—less weight to lift up once you’ve removed the bike’s front wheel, and a lower profile for better aerodynamics—we recommend the RockyMounts SwitchHitter. Because it’s a hanging rack, it isn’t as easy to load as the Sherpa 2.0, and you must unload your bikes to tilt the rack down for vehicle access. If your vehicle didn’t come with one, you’ll need to buy an add-on system. In our test drives, the Race Ready also didn’t hold the bikes as securely as the Yakima HighRoad and RockyMounts TomaHawk did. The types we tested included: After testing scores of racks, we’ve determined that a tray-style hitch rack is the easiest to use and the most versatile, but the vehicle (or vehicles) and bike (or bikes) you own may limit your choices: To understand the pros and cons of different types of racks, we talked with the experts at a number of top bike and bike-rack shops across the country, including Rack Attack stores in Boston, Minneapolis, and Portland, Oregon; East Burke Sports in East Burke, Vermont; Chile Pepper Bike Shop in Moab, Utah; Backcountry Bike & Ski in Palmer, Alaska; Roscoe Village Bikes in Chicago; and Ridgefield Bicycle Company in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Also, the FullSwing fit so snugly into our vehicle’s hitch receiver that it was difficult to insert it while also supporting its weight. But we still think the Sherpa 2.0 is a better buy. 112 sold. So it’s not suitable for carrying some specialty and electric bikes, but the vast majority of modern bikes come in well under that weight limit. The straps connecting the rack to the car are simple to tighten, and the hold-downs that keep the bikes in place are coated to protect the bike frames. Although the Yakima HighSpeed is a fine fork-mount rack, it isn’t compelling for the price. But it can’t tilt up when it’s empty or tilt down for access to a vehicle’s rear area. You can easily fold the rack up when it’s empty, using a handle at the rear, or tilt it down when loaded to gain access to a vehicle’s cargo area. And if you tend to carry the same bikes, you probably have to sort out the positioning only once. During assembly, we noted whether the necessary tools were included and how easy the instructions were to follow (most directions needed improvement). Bikes are held by padded clamps that grip onto the frame, which is something that may make some owners—especially owners of carbon-fiber bikes—flinch. Photo: Rik Paul, The ramp is stored in a compartment inside the rack. A plastic knob on each leg allows you to loosen its grip on the toothed part of the tube to slide it over to a smooth section, where you can freely spin the leg to the perfect position. All three legs end in huge, pivoting rubber feet—larger than what you get on other racks—which help protect the car and provide serious grip. We found it to be the simplest to use of all the roof racks we tested, both when installing the rack on the vehicle and when loading a bike. If your bikes are mounted on the tow ball, ensure the load doesn’t exceed the maximum weight allowance, your specific requirements can be found in your car’s owner manual. You might be spending summer (mostly) in and around your home, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a drag. Once mounted, the Bones is sturdy and stable. Weighing less than 32 pounds, the Sherpa 2.0 is the lightest two-bike tray rack we tested (most others ranged from 45 pounds to 56 pounds), so it’s especially easy to install in the hitch receiver or remove for storage. Swing-away racks will swing the bikes completely away from the car, giving you unlimited access while the bikes remain on the rack. This position keeps the bike safe and, unlike other pickup carriers we tested, out of the driver’s rear line of sight. Wirecutter is reader-supported. The Thule ProRide was the only roof rack we tested that supports a bike by clamping around a frame tube, rather than supporting it by a wheel or the forks. We loaded bikes, noting how high we had to lift them and how easily they could be secured on the rack. None of the models we have listed require any drilling — they attach via straps, to the roof rack, or directly onto the hitch receiver — so leave the kit in the tool chest for this job. The NV 2.0 has a gorgeous design, with a nifty integrated work stand. There are two versions of the Velo Gripper. The bike’s wheels are held by individual trays, which fold inward when not needed for more compact storage, but the mechanism was stiff and not easy to use. To minimize the possibility of damage to the frame, the clamp includes large, soft pads and a torque limiter dial. The release handle for tilting the rack is less accessible, too. It is also available in a five-bike version. The RockyMounts TomaHawk was not quite as easy to use as the Yakima HighRoad, nor did it hold our bikes quite as solidly—on choppy local roads, the bikes rocked a little. Make sure the bike rack does not obscure the car’s registration plate or rear lights by measuring the amount of space you have available and choosing your rack accordingly. The Sherpa 2.0 hits a sweet spot in performance and price that makes it stand out. It was also more difficult to install. Be safe. Although the Sherpa 2.0 is more expensive than other types of racks, its price is about average among our test group of tray racks. The Velo Gripper doesn’t come with a way to lock the clamps or the bike, although you can often lock your bike to the truck directly. Thule’s hitch-locking system makes this hitch rack simpler than most to secure: Just slide the rack into a 1¼-inch or 2-inch receiver, close a pinch arm into the receiver’s hole, turn the tension knob to cinch it down, and use a key to lock the knob. When it’s not on the vehicle, it’s also nicely balanced, so it stands on its own, without needing supports. Types of Bike Racks. Our bike racks are easy to install, pair perfectly with a U-Haul hitch receiver and carry anywhere from 1 to 5 bicycles. After researching more than 220 bike racks and testing about 70 in recent years, we’ve found that the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 offers the best combination of solid construction, ease of use, a light weight, and a reasonable price. Be sure to measure your bed and bike before buying. It can also tilt down so you are able to access a vehicle’s rear cargo compartment, but this is more of a hassle than with a tray-style rack because you have to remove the bikes first. The Saris MTR 1-Bike was the most expensive and—at 35 pounds—the heaviest of the single-bike tray racks we tested. He’s also a seasoned auto journalist, with articles and reviews appearing in Cars.com, The Christian Science Monitor, Consumer Reports, U.S. News & World Report, Green Car Reports, and elsewhere. Thule and Yakima sell several types of add-on crossbars and mounts, but you should check the fit guide on the rack manufacturer’s website or talk to a bike-shop representative. That said, if you think you’ll ever be regularly carrying a second bike, or you even just want the flexibility to spontaneously throw on a friend’s bike, we still think the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 is the better choice. We found the MTR hard to tighten in the hitch; the bolt has a built-in key to turn it, but the tab doesn’t provide leverage to get the bolt tight. The EasyFold is also quick to install and lock to the vehicle, and integrated cable locks let you secure bikes to the rack. Then we removed the bikes and rack, and folded the rack (if possible) for storage. The 2-inch hitch version will also accept an add-on extension for carrying a third bike. Oops.). Of the roof racks we tested, the Yakima HighRoad was the easiest to work with—both when mounting it on the vehicle and when loading bikes. Of the pickup-bed carriers we’ve tested (none of which need to be bolted to the truck), it provides the best balance of compactness, ease of use, and affordable price. Although we think this tray-style hitch rack is the easiest to load and use overall, we also have picks for cyclists with other needs. This means there’s a risk that you’ll forget your bike is on the roof while you’re entering a garage or pulling up to a fast-food drive-through window—as one Wirecutter editor who shall not be named can attest. But instead of swinging to the side, it extends rearward in a smooth, easy motion, which makes it easier to use. And though the rack held the bikes securely, they wiggled from side to side more than on the other racks due to less-rigid clamping arms. We also had concerns about the possibility of its plastic saddles damaging the finish on a bike. To access a vehicle’s rear, you step on a release lever to tilt the rack down, which is easy to do. Looking for a bicycle rack for your car? During our test drives, this setup held a variety of bikes rock-steady through bumps and swerves—more tightly than any other roof rack we tested. We’ve made more than 300 budget picks across our catalog of product reviews. The Sherpa 2.0 holds most types of bikes (up to 40 pounds each), tilts out of the way (even when fully loaded) so you can get in your vehicle, and folds up compactly when you aren’t using it. Its adjustment system was intuitive and effortless, and it was very stable on the back of a moving vehicle. Be cool. Securing the SuperClamp to the hitch isn’t as easy as with the Kuat Sherpa 2.0—you need to go old school and tighten a (lockable) bolt in the hitch receiver, instead of simply turning a knob. The Saris Sentinel grabbed our attention with its light weight (7 pounds) and retractable arms. Of the 70 bike racks we’ve tested, the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 tray-style hitch rack is the best overall for transporting one or two bikes. The Beta doesn’t hold bikes quite as solidly as the Sherpa 2.0 does—during our test drives, the bikes swung a little more on the rack’s arms, but we never worried that they’d come loose. A nifty touch: The shipping box doubles as a platform for assembly. This makes it relatively easy to get the rack on and off the car. The Thule UpRide Universal Bike Rack is an ingenious, lightweight roof rack for your bicycle that sets up in minutes and is a safe for your car as it is for your bike. Folding the Bones is easy, and the curved arms and legs collapse until the rack is nearly flat. The Thule Raceway Pro is the most expensive trunk rack we’ve tested, but it’s also a step above the other models in quality and features: It has a better ratcheting system and mounting straps, and it’s the only one that lets you lock your bike to the rack and lock the rack to the car. However, it swayed more than the Kuat Highline or the Saris Bones, likely due to a lack of side straps. It’s also easy to use: After inserting a lockable pin through the receiver tube, you simply turn a knob to tighten the rack in the receiver hitch—a much simpler and quicker process than for most other models, which make you crouch down near the hitch to tighten a nut on the receiver bolt.
